Description: The Department of English at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) invites applications for a tenure-stream appointment in the area of Early Modern Literature. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, and will commence July 1, 2019. Candidates must have a PhD in English or related field with a specialization in Early Modern Literature, by the time of appointment or shortly thereafter. We are seeking candidates whose research and teaching focus on critical race studies; the global early modern; early modern contact zones; and/or queer and sexuality studies. Applicants are encouraged to speak to how their research and teaching activities will complement and build on existing departmental strengths and contribute to early modern literary studies at UTSC and the tri-campus University of Toronto. The successful candidate will teach a variety of courses in early modern literature and culture, as well as a historical survey course on premodern literatures in English.

Candidates must demonstrate a record of excellence in both research and teaching. Evidence of research excellence will be shown through research of an internationally competitive caliber, demonstrated by publications in leading journals and/or with leading presses in the relevant field; or a research pipeline that is at a high international level; presentations at significant conferences; awards; and strong endorsements from referees of high international standing. Evidence of excellence in teaching will be demonstrated by teaching accomplishments, and the teaching dossier (including a statement of teaching philosophy, teaching evaluations, and sample syllabi) submitted as part of this application, as well as strong letters of reference. The successful candidate is expected to be able to communicate effectively as an undergraduate and graduate teacher.

The appointment is in the Department of English at UTSC with full membership in the tri-campus Graduate Department of English at the University of Toronto. The Centre for Reformation and Renaissance Studies, along with multidisciplinary collaborative programs in areas including Book History and Print Culture, Diaspora and Transnational Studies, Women’s and Gender Studies, and Sexual Diversity Studies, foster an especially dynamic research environment for early modernists at the University of Toronto. The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative and independent research at the highest international level; graduate teaching and supervision in the tri-campus graduate program; undergraduate teaching on the Scarborough campus; and service activities in the undergraduate and graduate Departments. They also will be expected to contribute to the intellectual life of the UTSC Department of English.

UTSC is located in the east end of Toronto, in the beautiful Highland Creek Valley and on the traditional territories of the Huron-Wendat, the Seneca, and the Mississaugas of the Credit.
